The Heart of the Holiday Season Beats in Small Businesses
26 Nov 2025
Black Friday is fast approaching, which means that millions of Americans still groggy from hearty turkey dinners will soon line up outside of big-box retailers in search of unbeatable deals on televisions, clothes and toys.
But as the holiday shopping season kicks into high gear, Mission West Community Development Partners (MWCDP) also recognizes the value of pausing to celebrate smaller businesses.
And as Black Friday gives way to Small Business Saturday, we hope you will take a moment to remember the small operations that make up 99.3% of all Montana businesses and employ nearly 67% of the state’s workers.
Small Business Saturday has been around since 2010 as a way to put focus on smaller, locally-owned businesses after Black Friday’s frenzy of commerce.
That attention may be particularly important this year, given that many small-business owners have been hit hard by rising tariffs that have increased their prices and created uncertainty in their supply chain.
There are a number of ways to support local retailers on Small Business Saturday, from shopping and dining locally to boosting local business on social media to buying local gift cards for family and friends.
Even a positive online review can help boost a local business’ profile and bring them to the attention of other potential shoppers.
A small-business support system
MWCDP has long celebrated the value of small, local businesses as drivers of job creation, workforce development, and community involvement. That’s why we make a point to develop resources that help entrepreneurs succeed, whether they’re just starting out or looking to grow.
MWCDP’s Business Development Center, for example, is an easy-to-use information hub that connects would-be business owners with mentorship opportunities, funding, and the resources they need to start or expand their businesses.
In addition, we host events throughout the year that provide expert knowledge and networking opportunities for business owners and we employ a diverse and passionate team that is dedicated to helping local businesses meet and exceed their goals.
Strengthening community
There’s no shortage of places to shop this holiday season, and online retail has made it easier than ever to send money out of your community.
On Small Business Saturday, we encourage you to visit the businesses that are there every day to support the community.
Beyond providing jobs, an estimated 90% of small-business owners have financially supported community or civic groups, charities, youth sports programs and other organizations in the city where they operate.
Another 76% of business owners report volunteering their time in the community. That support is a large part of what gives a city its character.
MWCDP will celebrate small businesses on Nov. 29, and we hope you will join us.
